All You Need Is Cody

The only essay in the archive its author has formally disowned — Steve's note above says there is no reason to read it. He is about half right. The long middle is a mid-2023 product demo, screenshots of an assistant answering questions about the vampire-shapeshifting code in Wyvern, Steve's million-line personal game, and demos of superseded software age like vacation slides. But the opening confession is the real thing, written (as he announces up top) without going through Comms: the career defeats he says he keeps secret, from 500 files of uncommented FORTRAN on a floppy disk in 1990 to the comment-stripped C load balancer he calls the real story of why he left Amazon.

For a vendor launch post it is unusually honest about failure modes: Cody flubs a package name on camera and the error stays in the shot, and Steve rates the no-embeddings version at "as high as 30-40% bullshit." The demos also quietly contain a first sketch of the agent fleet — parallel "async Cody workers" bossed around Sorcerer Mickey style, smart brooms carrying the water — a picture Steve would keep drawing for years afterward.
