Welcome to the Wasteland: A Thousand Gas Towns

The middle Gas chapter, and the one where the project stops being a tool and starts recruiting. Steve stages it as a mock press conference, feeding himself the questions ("I'm glad you asked") so he can walk a genuinely intricate trust protocol at full rant speed. Readers who want mechanism get it: three kinds of actors, a four-stage work lifecycle, a trust ladder that turns good contributors into the people who judge contributions. Readers who want comedy get the leveling system that scored Steve at level 18 and Linus Torvalds at 14, scrapped days before launch, plus the confession that the whole apparatus keeps mutating into an RPG nobody designed. And anyone deciding how much of it to believe gets the most disarming sentence in the piece: Steve expects to throw the system out and rebuild it at least twice within three months.

Read it skeptically where skepticism matters. The anti-cheating story is one paragraph about collusion rings having "a distinctive topology" and a promise of more later, which is thin for a system whose entire product is reputation. The character sheets were pre-seeded by importing ten thousand GitHub contributors nobody asked, a move the essay defends on legal grounds ("public data is public data") while skipping the consent question entirely. And it opens by cheerfully revoking the safety warning Steve had issued two months before — "I know I told you that you were gonna die if you used Gas Town" — which tells you how fast this ground shifts under a reader. After two chapters of solo mad science, this is also where the volunteer team finally gets full billing, and the essay is at its warmest handing out that credit.
