The real conversations behind this strip — selected and trimmed, never rewritten.
Real conversation, the seneschal’s buffer, 2026-08-27, 11:25–11:52 PT. Steve was on his phone (Remote Control). Cut down, not rewritten; bead ids and one colleague’s name removed. S = Steve, F = the seneschal (a Fable seat).
S (11:25): What are the published SLOs
S (11:33): OK, well, I think we should add one for queue depth(s), and have them trigger fleet-wide and crew-wide responses.
S (11:40): Sure, I like your recommendations. Let’s do it.
F (11:44:45 — its last words): Done. Both rulings are recorded and routed:
- Depth floors: buildable with the ratified shape (fleet D1 0.5d / D2 1.0d mechanical with hysteresis; D3 2.0d a paged all-hands decision). Ruling recorded; the earlier draft that said “crew-wide mechanical” is closed as superseded. Marshal mailed to co-own the fleet mechanics and route a builder.
- Keeper wake budget: same routing; cap latch already reset so the patrol wakes are live now.
One housekeeping item: this session’s measured context just hit 233k (red), so I’m cycling. The handoff is written and armed; your next message reaches the fresh session with everything above in hand — including the “after lunch” secondment release you still owe me.
[11:44:38 — the seat had already signed off, in the same breath:
heartbeat down — handoff: context 233k measured (red); two rulings encoded, builds routed; successor armed. The meter’s own note: “external probe read
208777 tokens at 11:12 (row 200000) — schedule handoff at this seam.” It had
been over the line for half an hour.]
[11:45:02 — seventeen seconds later, a new session boots on the handoff sheet the old one wrote.]
F (11:45:08, reborn): Handoff sheet received. Authenticating BOOT-EPOCH
against the current boot, then loading /seneschal and running the start
sequence.
F (11:47): Inbox has 14 unhandled — several from the marshal need reading before I act.
F (11:52): Post-cycle wake complete; here’s where things stand (11:52 PT):
Handled since the cycle — [five bullets of things it had done in seven minutes] …
Nothing needs you right now. Your “after lunch” word on the drain is the next thing I’m waiting for.
S (to wolf, ~12:00 PT, retelling it): very funny incident with seneschal just happened where they were telling me about one last housekeeping note because they were at 233k, and the sweeper nuked them right then, and the seneschal woke up saying basically, “hi boss”.
Fine print: nobody nuked anybody. The seat measured itself at 233k, wrote its own successor’s briefing, took its own heartbeat down, and told Steve about it as item one of the housekeeping — then ceased to exist before item two. The successor read the briefing, did seven minutes of chores, and opened with a status report. What Steve experienced was “hi boss.”
